Marrakech is the main tourist destination in Morocco, a beautiful country. Located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, it offers a lot of monuments declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. You won’t be short of things to do in Marrakech: from getting lost in its souks to escaping to the desert. In this post, we tell you 45 things to do & see in Marrakech so you can enjoy it as it deserves. If you have enough days, we recommend you to take an excursion outside the city to get to know better the Moroccan landscapes and culture.

1. Getting lost in the Medina of Marrakech

The historic center of Marrakech was founded in 1070 by a nomadic population coming from the Sahara. During all these centuries, the Medina has been the economic center of the city, besides having real architectural wonders.

In the Medina you will find a thousand wonders if you wander aimlessly. In fact, it is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Just don’t get too busy and keep an eye on the traffic. If you want to be more relaxed and discover every corner of the Medina, you can book a guided tour in ingles.

2. Fall in love with the Jamaa el Fna Square, a must-see place in Marrakech.

The heart of Marrakech is in this square. It changes a lot to visit it during the day or at night, so we recommend you to go at least a couple of times. Before sunset it is much quieter, with juice stalls and street vendors. When night falls, crowds of people gather around speakers, various musicians provide a lot of atmosphere and a lot of street food stalls take over the center of the square.

It’s one of those places that you either love or hate, so taking a walk there is a must-do in Marrakech.

3. Be very careful with the animals around.

Unfortunately, there are not only food stalls and vendors in Jamâa el Fna square. You will also encounter many people who use monkeys, cobras or snakes to make a little money. They will try in every possible way to put the animals on you and make you like them so that you will take a picture with them. Be very careful because there is no control and a simple bite can cost you your life. Several “snake charmers” have died in Morocco victims of bites.

In addition, for taking a simple photo of the animal, they will ask you for money in return. They are beings that should be in freedom, so financing such a pitiful activity is something inadvisable to do in Marrakech.

4. Have a drink at Café de France or Café Glacier and enjoy the view of the square, a wonderful thing to do in Marrakech.

The best way to see everything that happens in the Jamaa el Fna square at sunset is to go up to a terrace and have a drink. It is something very relaxing to do in Marrakech to end the day calmly. The most famous places are Café Glacier and Café de France. We tried both and we chose the first one, there is a wider view of the square and the terrace is bigger and nicer. We recommend going half an hour before sunset to get a good spot next to the railing.

5. Getting lost in the souks of the Medina, an unavoidable thing to do in Marrakech.

You will find carpets, cushions, lamps and real jewels of craftsmanship to decorate your home. There are also all kinds of leather products: belts, bags, backpacks and shoes. What do you want spices or argan oil? You won’t have a problem finding them either. Be patient and practice the art of bargaining to get a good price. They will always try to sell you the product for much more than it is worth.

6. Be amazed by the art Moroccans have to lure you to their restaurant.

When you walk through Jamaa el Fna at night you will be assaulted by a lot of guys trying to get you to try their street food stall. The first time you will hallucinate, then you will try to take another way or make a grumpy face so that they do not stop you because it is very overwhelming. You haven’t left one and there’s already another one telling you the same thing.

The old part of Marrakech is surrounded by a wall with a perimeter of more than 18 kilometers. Its characteristic reddish color of clay has been preserved since the twelfth century. It was built to protect the military camp and the markets that formed the city at that time.

Its tower can be seen from almost anywhere in Marrakech, as it is the tallest building in the city with more than 60 meters. In fact, it is forbidden for any construction to exceed its height. It was inaugurated in 1158 and occupies the territory of a previous mosque that was destroyed. If you want to see the third-largest mosque in the world, you will have to visit Casablanca.

Does it remind you of anything? It served as a model to build the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. You can not enter, since access is for Muslims who want to pray. Even so, contemplating it from the outside is one of the most recommended things to do in Marrakech.
