Rent a car in Morocco

Rent a car in Morocco

If you’re thinking about traveling around Morocco on your own and renting a car, you’ll have a lot of questions. At  Marrakech Camel Trips  , we know this, as many of our clients ask us this all the time, which is why I’m dedicating my time today to writing about renting a car in Morocco.

The first question Marrakech Camel Trips customers always ask us   is: “Do you need an international driving license in Morocco?”

Do you need an international driving permit in Morocco? Well, the answer is no! You don’t need an international driving permit!

This permit is required in some non-European Union countries, but if you plan to rent a car in Morocco to travel at your own pace, you don’t need to apply.

What documents do you need to bring to rent a car in Morocco?

Well, you need to present to the company you’re renting a car from in Morocco: your driver’s license (of course, it must be valid), your passport, your national identity card, and a credit card to make the payment.

Renting a car in Morocco is simple. The rental company will fill out the form with all your personal information and ask for your credit card details as a guarantee, even if you paid in cash.

They’ll give you all the car documents along with the contract you signed, and you can begin your journeys in Morocco at your own pace.

When renting a car in Morocco, you should be aware that driving is very different from Spain, especially in large cities like Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat, etc. Driving in these cities is chaotic, it’s as if everyone wants to be first and pass just a few millimeters away from your own car. At least for me, when I drive in Marrakech, it’s very difficult to adapt to the dangerous driving in the city.

Also be aware that there are a lot of motorcycles in the cities, and many of them drive without insurance, so if you’re unfortunate enough to be hit, you’ll most likely have to pay the rental company for the damage to the vehicle.

Driving on the roads is more “relaxed,” you have to be especially careful with police radars because they hide like lions on the prowl, and after two kilometers they’ll stop you and ask for all your documentation, and that’s when you’ll discover the corruption of the police, because in many cases what they’re looking for isn’t to give you a ticket, but for you to give them money for their own pockets.

Also know that in Morocco, solid and broken lines are as if they don’t exist; they exist only for police purposes, not for drivers.

And there are no breathalyzer tests, with the little gadgets to blow things up, otherwise, the police detect it by smell.

Marrakech Camel tours  wishes you good luck on your car rental adventure in Morocco.
