7 things to see and do in Agadir in one day
Agadir is a large coastal city in southern Morocco. It is very westernized so you will find shopping malls and even restaurants that serve alcohol, something unusual in a Muslim country. If you are on your way through Morocco, it is not a bad idea to stop by. In this article we will tell you what to see in Agadir in one day, so you can make the most of it.
It is located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco near a mountain range that protects the city from the wind. Its location has made it an all-inclusive destination to relax for a few days without leaving the hotel, especially for domestic tourism. But you will want to know more about this city, if you continue reading I tell you the best things to see and do in Agadir.
Before I get into it I want to tell you about three things you should keep in mind if you are going to travel to Morocco. The first one is to be clear about how you are going to change money there, so that it costs you the minimum. Another issue you should take into account is to hire a good travel insurance to Morocco to go totally calm in this regard. Finally some people wonder if Agadir is dangerous. Our experience in that sense tells us that no, like the rest of Morocco it is rare that something happens to foreigners. Tours from Agadir
1. The promenade and the beach, the place to see in Agadir that you should not miss.
What we liked most about Agadir was the promenade. And strangely enough because it made us feel almost at home. When you see it you will realize that it could perfectly be on a promenade on the Mediterranean coast which, if you have been in the country for a few days, you will feel like it. I promise you that it was a counterpoint in Morocco that we found very pleasant. Tour del Marocco
There are several places to park very close to the restaurant area, once there you can choose to walk around or enjoy the beach. Whatever you do it will be difficult not to end up having a beer or an ice cream or even eating in one of the restaurants overlooking the beach. We did all three…
2. Take a guided tour to get to know the city perfectly.
We are very fond of doing a free tour the first day we arrive in a new city, it is the best way to start to get situated. In Agadir this option does not exist yet but you can do this guided tour which is not expensive at all. Today it is the best alternative to get to know the city with a guide in English and you can even improve it by adding a bath in a traditional hammam.
This tour will take you through the most interesting places to see in Agadir that I talk about in this article. The walled market Souk El Had, the kasbah, the promenade, the port and even an argan factory. In three hours you leave the city practically ready so if you are looking to visit Agadir in one day is definitely a great option.
3. Going up to see the view from the Kasbah of Agadir
Of the fortress of Agadir there are only some remains of walls and a door due to the earthquake that hit the city in 1960. Currently there is a project to restore it because for centuries it had a great commercial importance in the spice route that ran along the coast of Africa. Hopefully it will be done soon, the place needs it. For me it is already one of the best places to see in Agadir, but with the restoration the experience will be greatly improved. Viajes a Marrakech
While they decide to do the works the most beautiful of the Kasbah of Agadir is undoubtedly the panoramic view of the city and the port as well as the stunning beaches. If you have a car we recommend this plan at sunset.
4. Bargaining in the Souk el Had market, the best thing to do in Agadir.
If your thing is shopping I recommend visiting one of the most popular and largest markets in Morocco, the souk Souk el Had, where you will find all kinds of handicrafts, clothing, carpets and fresh produce. It is one of those that still retain the essence, there are others like those of Marrakech and Fez that are already too touristy.
In the souk of Agadir do not usually overwhelm you, nor insist on selling you whatever it is because they live mainly from local trade, not tourists. You can simply go to browse, have a juice or a delicious Moroccan breakfast. And if you want to buy something you will probably find better prices than in Marrakech.
5. A trip to the Paradise Valley, the best place to see near Agadir
The Paradise Valley is located about 20 kilometers from Agadir. It is a mountainous area with valleys in which there are many natural pools. These are usually surrounded by vegetation, palm trees and small bars to drink natural juices that have tables in the river.
I recommend stopping when you arrive in Agadir or leaving the city as you catch on the route, it’s a great plan to enjoy the surroundings in Agadir. If you do not have a car to get to the Valley of Paradise you can hire an excursion where you are picked up at your hotel in Agadir and take you to spend the day in this natural jewel. If you prefer you can choose to visit Essaouira, a smaller coastal town that is beautiful.
6. Savor the gastronomy of Agadir
Agadir is a resort town and as such has many restaurants where you can eat well, certainly quite westernized. You don’t have to worry too much, in the restaurants along the promenade you can eat well looking at the sea. We decided to eat at Le Nil Bleu, a place we would never enter on a European promenade, and it was good. Morocco Tours 8 days
It was very good, just keep in mind that it was almost at European prices. We paid about 30€ for a fish tajine, a grilled squid, a beer each and a Moroccan salad. All well served by professional people, which after a little time in Morocco you will be grateful for.
7. Escape to Taghazout, the surfing village in the south of Morocco.
A little further up the coast from Agadir is the fishing village of Taghazout. This little village is the mecca of surfing in Morocco so it has a very good atmosphere. It is also a very good place to eat fresh fish freshly caught by local fishermen.
If you are traveling in Morocco in your car I think the best way to get to Taghazout is to go without haste and do the coastal route from Agadir to Essaouira. You will find many dirt roads that lead to wild beaches, it is a place to go without haste and spend several days. If you do not have a vehicle you can go there to spend the day taking a local bus from Agadir. It is quite an experience and it only takes about half an hour to get there.
