What to buy as gifts from Morocco
Argan Oil
Argan is called “Morocco’s gold.” It helps keep the skin firm and healthy because it is full of vitamin E. Because there are so many tourists, it’s a shame that many producers go cheap and try to trick people in different ways. Be wary of oils that are sold in places where tourists go. Marrakech desert trips
I once bought an oil that said it was 100%, but it was only 40%. I only buy it from cooperatives now.
Remember that oil stays good longer if it is packed well. Try to find dark bottles made of glass. The precious liquid gold is kept safe from the sun by its dark color.
Online, you can buy argan oil from many European and American brands. You can order them in your country and be sure they are certified, but the price will be much higher than in Morocco.
Olives and Olive Oil
The best olives I’ve ever had were from Morocco. Souk zitoun in Darija is a market in Marrakech where you can buy different kinds of olives (with thyme, soaked in harissa, with preserved lemons etc).
They also make a great, cheap, and fresh gift.
Honey
Moroccan honey is very different from European honey, so it is worth trying. I still like Polish ones better because they don’t taste as strong, but Moroccan cacti honey is great if you like a crisp taste. There are also rosemary and orange blossom ones that people like. You can buy them in cooperatives, stores that sell herbs, and stores with a certain theme all over Morocco.
A Polish friend of mine named Monika runs Ayaso Concept Store in Marrakesh. They only sell organic, eco-friendly, and chemical-free items.
Amlou
Amlou or “Moroccan Nutella”. The only difference is that amlou is a lot better for you than Nutella. It is made with ground almonds, honey from orange blossoms, and argan oil. Beware of the cheap versions with peaunuts or the very hard ones with sugar or table oil. A liter of good amlou will never cost less than 30 euros.
Moroccan Sweets
Beautiful Moroccan pastries would make a great gift. Moroccans like sweets, so don’t worry, you can find tasty cookies just about anywhere:)
“Cornes de gazelle,” which look like the horns of a gazelle, are one of the most popular and fancy ones. They are filled with almond paste. I don’t like them, but if you like marzipan, you will also like these. Viajes a Marrakech
Soap that’s black
Black soap is a great gift for women, especially. It is made naturally where it is sold and is very cheap. You can buy it by the pound or in boxes or bags that are already packed. There are also different ways to make it, like adding lavender or argan oil.
Spices
Morocco is known for its spices, and most visitors buy bundles of them before leaving the Kingdom. Cumin, turmeric, and paprika are the best ones to buy in Morocco. You should also try “the roof of the shop,” or ras el hanout, which is a perfect mix of more than 10 freshly ground spices. You should also buy harissa, which is a spicy sauce made of chili peppers, mint, and dried verveine.
Fabrics: If you go to the south of Morocco and the Sahara region, make sure to visit shops that sell mehlafs, which are traditional fabrics from Mauritius that Sahraouiya women wrap around their bodies. My Swedish friends in Morocco use them as curtains, pillow cases, and other things. They are made in such a unique way that they will look great in your home.
