Going to the Medina

The medina in Asilah is one of the most beautiful in Morocco because of its narrow streets, indigo walls with murals, Moorish-style houses, cleanliness, peace, and the sound of the waves from the nearby sea.

During their rule in the 15th century, the Portuguese built high walls around it, and there are several gates. The most important ones are: Bab Homar, also known as “The Door of the Earth,” which is under a tower and has the coat of arms of the king of Portugal; Bab al Bahar, also known as “The Gate of the Sea,” which is next to a Portuguese square tower that looks out over the city and the sea; and Bab Kasbah, in the north, which is surrounded by gardens and is near the Muslim cemetery.

Walk down Alcazaba or Kasbah Street, where you’ll find the Kebir mosque with its tall octagonal minaret and the Centre Hassan II Rencontres Internationales, which was built on the site of an old barracks and hosts all kinds of cultural exhibitions.

Another interesting place in the medina is the square of Sidi Ali Ben Hamdouche, which has a small mosque that was used as a Catholic church when the Portuguese ruled and is dominated by the city’s symbol, the Portuguese tower.

Don’t miss the Muslim cemetery next to the water. It has ceramic tombs in many different colors. Here is the Mausoleum of Sidi Ahmed El Mansur Saadi, who took back the city after the Battle of Three Kings.

For the best view, go to the lookout point of Asilah, which is above the cemetery. From there, you can watch a beautiful sunset over the sea. Morocco tours 8 days

Shopping in Asilah

The medina is where most of the shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts from the area are. There is something for everyone: slippers and shoes, handbags, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, carpets, hand-painted furniture, fabrics, woodcarvings, brass lanterns, herbal products, and even musical instruments.

Most of the people selling are friendly and easygoing, and the starting prices are fair, especially considering that haggling is expected. It’s best to bring cash in dirhams, the local currency, since most places don’t accept credit or debit cards and not all places accept euros. You should get dirhams before you go. We suggest exchanging money at hotels, the port, or any bank.

Shopping in Asilah is much less stressful than shopping in places like Tangier because there is less noise and the prices are much lower.
